The Trump administration applied retaliatory tariffs on certain imports of French and German non-sparkling wine, effective Jan. 12, 2021, as part of the ongoing dispute between the U.S. and EU over aircraft subsidies for Boeing and Airbus.
The U.S. Trade Representative’s latest action applies 25 percent tariffs on French and German wines greater than 14 percent alcohol, which had previously been exempt.
Last year, the USTR imposed 14 percent tariffs on certain wine imports from the EU, specifically those with an alcohol content of 14 percent or lower, which prompted a jump in higher-alcohol wine imports produced mostly in France and Spain.
